I recently drove a sweet Fiat 124 Spider Abarth press car on a road trip from Toronto to Quebec City. That story is !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! if you’re interested. In a few weeks I have to drive 10+ hrs from Toronto to Moline, Illinois for a family function and I’m looking to do it in another press car. But what should I take?
It’s worth noting that not exactly everything is on the table. No way the exotics like Lamborghini or Ferrari will let me road trip one of their beauties in November. But if it’s an all-weather car from a mainstream manufacturer I can probably get ahold of it.
The Fiat was a fun car but overall a poor road-trip vehicle. There aren’t many turns along this r oute to exploit anyways. I’m thinking of a big sedan. Maybe an E-Class Benz, or a SRT 392 Charger. What do you think? What should I road trip?

im thinking a brand new lada 4x4 with factory camo paint

TT RS
I love V10s noises but they aren’t really a thing anymore so an I5 will do.

A Miata.
You’re supposed to “ stop and smell the roses” aka make some little detours for curvy roads. Dont blame the car.

How about a Buick Regal Tour X? Would be interesting to see a long distance, Oppo review of it.

Hmmm TT RS is a cool car but I dunno if it’s what I want to drive at 75-mph with the cruise control on for 10 hrs.

2019 Volvo S60 T5 or T6

Bingo. Make a statement.
![]() 10/30/2018 at 09:58 |

I’ve got 1,000 km to cover in a single day. Stopping and smelling of roses will not happen. Plus, I just road tripped a Fiata two weeks ago!
![]() 10/30/2018 at 09:58 |

Now here we go. That’s a road trip car. I’ll look into it.
![]() 10/30/2018 at 09:59 |

Volvo has the best seats! Could be a great road trip car.
![]() 10/30/2018 at 09:59 |

I like both of your choice. Also maybe a Stinger...everyone has reviewed it as a sports car first. I’d be interested to know how it is on a road trip.
Or maybe a Jaguar XF Sportbrake
![]() 10/30/2018 at 10:02 |

Two solid options. I’ve always liked the S tinger.

GM Canada doesn’t offer the TourX?
![]() 10/30/2018 at 10:02 |

The GS F was mentioned on Oppo yesterday. Any way you could swing one of those?
If you want AWD, something Audi, because I'm sure a WRX STI would not be comfortable for that long.
![]() 10/30/2018 at 10:04 |

Fine - RS3 :).
![]() 10/30/2018 at 10:05 |

See if Audi is giving out the new RS5 Sportbacks yet. If not, RS5 coupe.

Yeah, I would also go big sedan. They are the best at soaking up the miles.
If you can’t get something too expensive, even something like an Avalon would probably work very well.
![]() 10/30/2018 at 10:10 |

Exactly my thoughts. I think Buick is so buried in the plastic interior choices forced on them by the accountants they just admit you’ll get used to staring at it eventually. How it works as a car is actually more important to our interests than if it meets the reviewers personal aes thetic.

I just realized this. So that’s off the table.
![]() 10/30/2018 at 10:11 |

Yeah big cushy sedan is my aim.
![]() 10/30/2018 at 10:12 |

GS would be nice but oddly the Lexus press fleet doesn’t keep any around for us to drive.

Dodge Grand Caravan GT.........

Definitely don’t do it in a rental spec Mitsubishi mirage. I did Buffalo to Detroit round the lake. It was awful.
I’d say take a newer Volvo or a CX5 with the turbo 4.

Ford Focus, did 2500 miles to-and-from Trois-Rivieres, Quebec along pretty much the same route and enjoyed it.

Yes to the SRT 392 Charger. I’ve done the drive from the border to Chicago many times. Would love to do it in one of those. The adaptive suspension will come in handy on I69.

Either the new Navigator or the new Lexus LS. Big, comfy, amazing seats, 4WD/ AWD traction.

E38 740i

I never understood what they were thinking, when I see Allroads all the time around here.
![]() 10/30/2018 at 10:31 |

Call up GM, ask them for a presser Regal TourX.
![]() 10/30/2018 at 10:34 |

I know, just being an ass because you said its not good at it.
![]() 10/30/2018 at 10:40 |

Navigator is like driving an apartment. I don’t like it. LS would be nice.
![]() 10/30/2018 at 10:41 |

No TourX in Canada.
![]() 10/30/2018 at 10:41 |

why tho
![]() 10/30/2018 at 10:42 |
|
You mean the 5-Series someone stepped on?
![]() 10/30/2018 at 10:50 |

The infotainment on the LS will still drive you nuts but the stereo is fantastic and it feels more expensive than it is.

Well mostly northern states so the roads are usually tended to in the winter (unless a blizzard or large snow storm comes through) and well salted sooooo, big Infiniti or Lexus sedan. Something of a road sofa, cushy ride and lots of power . But honestly if I was doing the trip, I would just fly, I can’t be in a car more than a few hours...
![]() 10/30/2018 at 11:01 |

Flights are money.
![]() 10/30/2018 at 11:24 |

Ex cept for Michigan. The roads will be ice for a couple weeks before we ever see a salt truck. The first snow I will see a car in the ditch or tracks through the ditch every mile or so in some of the freeways around Metro Detroit. You are on your own here.

NERTS!
![]() 10/30/2018 at 11:36 |

I would like to see how the Buick LaCrosse road sofas.
![]() 10/30/2018 at 11:36 |
|
PERFECT! This means you can ask for the TourX and when they say ‘we don’t have one’ simply reply ‘well how about a GS then?’
![]() 10/30/2018 at 11:36 |
|
I’d say AWD Volvo/Mercedes/Audi
10/30/2018 at 11:56 |

Citroen C5 Aircross just to see what their new progressive hydraulic cushion suspension is like. (I know, no Citroens in Canada)
Or Scat Pack Challenger. Just because.

I have a few friends than own their own planes. Cost of gas and hotel and I’m there.

Clearly GT stands for Grand Touring. Clearly that makes it the perfect road trip vehicle........
All honesty, there’s nothing new I’d want to road trip in short of a Challenger/Charger.
![]() 10/30/2018 at 12:43 |

My ideal road trip car, as far as what’s currently on sale, would be an E-Class wagon. If you’re looking for a sedan, go LS500 or Continental.
![]() 10/30/2018 at 12:44 |
|
The new F-Type or the AMG GT?
![]() 10/30/2018 at 13:24 |

Lexus LC
Audi S/RS7
MB E 63 S
Too much of long shots?
![]() 10/30/2018 at 13:52 |

Golf R or Arteon(or whatever it’s called.)
![]() 10/30/2018 at 15:27 |

I would take whatever fun car I had. Preferably something TVR

Maybe the new Toyota Avalon or a Genesis. You could also check with FCA on one of the LX triplets. Something with cushy seats, plenty of leg room, a quiet interior , and a long enough wheelbase to prevent porpoising.
